Welcome to the Heartland District...The Heartland District of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) represents 56 member Unitarian Universalist congregations throughout Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan and Ohio with over 7,500 member UUs.  As part of the MidAmerica Region, the Heartland District is in partnership with the Central Midwest and Prairie Star districts to broaden the scope of services and programs which are made available to our members.

We use our resources to promote and develop strong, growing congregations that interact with other UU congregations, their communities, the District, and the UUA.  We have program staff and consultants whose job it is to make your job as congregational leaders easier.  Our job is to support you - the member congregations - and help you - the individuals - find yourself at home in one of those congregations.

The Heartland District was formed in 2000 from a combination of the Unitarian Universalist District of Michigan (UUDOM) and the Ohio Valley Unitarian Universalist District (OVUUD).  The Heartland District is one of 19 Unitarian Universalist districts in the nation, all of which exist to help congregations seek and achieve best practices.

We hope you enjoy your journey through our website and easily find the information and connections you seek.  If you don't find what you're looking for, please get in touch with us.

In faith,
Rev. Dr. Lisa Presley
District Executive

Mission Statement...The Heartland District’s mission is to nurture healthy congregations that support one another and share Unitarian Universalism in their communities and with the world.

District Staff...consists of a District Executive, Faith Development Director, and a District Administrator each working from their homes in Michigan, Kentucky, and Indiana respectively.  Click HERE to learn more about the District staff.

Board of Trustees...The Heartland District Board of Trustees is made up of a president, vice president, treasurer, secretary and currently three members-at-large.  Board of Trustees positions are two-year terms with a limit of two consecutive terms in the same position and total cap of six consecutive years of service.  The current president of the Board of Trustees, Amy Taylor, is a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Bloomington, Indiana.  Please direct correspondence to Board members at districtpresident@heartlanduu.org.

Governance...The Heartland District was the second district organized according to the Carver Policy Governance Model.  Under this model, the Board of Trustees is responsible for being in conversation (linkage) with its ownership (congregations) to articulate the priorities of the District, and to provide staff with the appropriate ethical and business parameters in which to work.  The Board holds the district executive accountable for meeting goals and maintains an ongoing monitoring process.  All is done from the perspective of serving Unitarian Universalism.

In 2011, the district accepted the Unitarian Universalist Association Global ENDS as its ENDS.
