Who We Are
Representing congregations in the Midwest and upper South, the Heartland District uses its resources to promote and develop strong, growing congregations that interact with other UU congregations, their communities, the District, and the UUA. The Heartland District was formed in 2000 from a merger of the Unitarian Universalist District of Michigan (UUDOM) and the Ohio Valley Unitarian Universalist District (OVUUD). The Heartland District, one of 20 Unitarian Universalist districts in the nation, serves 8,099 members and 53 congregations in the states of Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, and Ohio. Our vision is of Heartland District cultivating a beloved identity of strong connections among congregations, the District, and the larger Unitarian Universalist movement. Heartland District provides its staff and volunteers the opportunity to deepen their faith while doing District work. In our vision, Unitarian Universalism's vitality improves the quality of spiritual and religious life in the Heartland District. |

Chalice Lighters Program
Help Spread the Light Of Unitarian Universalism
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed it's the only thing that ever has." - Margaret Mead
UUs have hidden their light under the proverbial bushel long enough. The time has come for us to share our message of a religion of freedom, reason and tolerance with our friends and neighbors throughout the Heartland District. As a Chalice Lighter, you can help spread the light of the unique message of Unitarian Universalism.
What is a Chalice Lighter? Chalice Lighters are determined to see Unitarian Universalism grow. They believe that our world needs the light of our religion and are committed to share that light.
Chalice Lighters are willing to give a helping hand to other UUs in the Heartland District who are fostering new societies, and to support the others who can flourish and grow with financial assistance.
Chalice Lighters are committed UUs who have pledged to respond with a specific contribution to light a new chalice or help an existing one grow brighter.
Chalice Lighters are committed UUs who have pledged ongoing financial support for grants to member congregations in order to foster the growth of Unitarian Universalism in the Heartland District.
How does the Program Work? All Heartland member congregations are eligible to apply for a Chalice Lighter Grant. The HUUD Extension Committee reviews each request to determine if a project fits the program guidelines. If it does, it will be included in a subsequent "Call". The Extension Committee selects up to three Chalice Lighter calls over the course of each year (January-April-October). Chalice Lighter donors are sent information about the selected project in a "Call" letter and asked for their donation.
Grants can be for: First or additional minister First or additional Religious Educator First music director First paid office staff Capital Improvements New congregation organizing Innovative growth
Why do we need Chalice Lighters? Our District is making a significant contribution to the growth of Unitarian Universalism. Frequently, growing congregations must move mountains with limited resources. Chalice Lighters make a difference to those congregations by providing much-needed funds.
The HUUD Extension Committee oversees the program and picks only the most important, best thought out projects for your support. Chalice Lighters are called no more than three times each year.
How Can You Become a Chalice Lighter? Complete a Chalice Lighter pledge card and mail to: Heartland District of the UUA 445 N. Pennsylvania St., Suite 510 Indianapolis, IN 46204-1893 Email: office@heartlanduu.org

Spread the Word! If you have found in your congregation a community of like-minded seekers, help us spread the word. If you have found in your congregation an accepting welcoming family of friends, help us open more doors. If you have found in your congregation a spiritual home, help us shine our light of hope.
